Tom

A professional journalist for 17 years, Tom is a native Californian who has lived in Durango since 1998 – the year he married his wife, Karla. “Hey, I visited that place when I was about 15,” she said at the time with a somewhat fanatical gleam in her eye. “Let's move there. It's great.” They did and she was right. They now have two fantastic kids, 11 and 8, a "classic" Durango house that tilts 8 inches toward the south, plenty of ski equipment, miscellaneous bicycles and a cat that insists on using the dining table legs as scratching posts despite knowing better.

It took 50 pages or so for The Orphan Master’s Son to click, then it was a great, roller-coaster read. Rebuilt Mustangs in Pyongyang? .46-caliber pistols? The surreal nature of the book at times reminded me of Hunter S. Thompson’s drug-fueled rants, and even of the Kim Jong Il parody in the movie, “Team America.” Go, fiction! Go Adam Johnson!
